Philadelphia Clamper Bracelet on Black Bakelite Base

This is only the 3rd Philly Clamper that I've made with this ultra rare black bakelite clamper shape base.  I may have enough of the material to make perhaps one other, unless I create another design for it.  The philly clamper is one of the very few vintage designs that I occasionally reproduce, and when I do I try to put my own flair on it.  Using a black base, in this instance, makes this unlike any vintage philly that I've ever seen or heard of existing.  Most were made with just a few colors used for the base, green, red, orange, and yellow, that I know of.  My black base philly has the customary colored bakelite fins on top of the bracelet, yellow, red, green, orange and dark blue moon.  Some of the colors have faint marbling.  The fins are a bit over 1 1/2 inches long.  The inner diameter of the bracelet is 2 5/16 inches from side to side and 1 3/4 inches from top to bottom.  The clamper is put together with a very stout new brass spring hinge that I've secured with brads, as well as placing it into grooves cut into each side of the bracelet.  The walls of the bracelet are 1 3/8 inches wide and average about 1/2 inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.  The last one of these that I made sold for over $1500, so this is definitely a bargain price for a gorgeous bracelet in a rare color.

Bakelite Sleeping Beauty with Prince and Wicked Queen Bracelet Bangle

Here is another fairy tale design that I carved recently from a gorgeous red and black marbled bakelite (actually the red has a purplish-pink tint to it).  The design features Sleeping Beauty asleep, with a handsome prince hovering over her and reaching out to her in concern.  Behind the prince is the wicked queen and her magic mirror, which she seems to be posing the "Who is the fairest of them all?" question to.   Also included in the design are a couple of snakes winding about the wicked queen, a sword at the waist of the prince, and the poisoned apple laying on the ground behind Beauty's head.  I used a bit of enamel wash in places to emphasize details and shadows.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls are carved from 1 3/4 inches wide and a bit less than 1/2 inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.

Bakelite Hansel and Gretel Nursery Rhyme Bracelet Bangle

This original design is one of my favorites and is another in my Nursery Rhyme series of carved bakelite bracelets.  Completed on 11-27-10, the design tells pretty much the whole story of Hansel and Gretel after they became lost in the woods and before their capture by the old witch who wanted to cook and eat them!  The bracelet features Hansel leading Gretel by the hand as he discovers the old witch's edible abode, a yummy looking gingerbread style house.  The old witch is plying the children with sweets, one cupcake in her outstretched left hand and lots of yummy sweets held in her other arm (and as you can see, I couldn't resist but include the gingerbread man running away from behind her..).  Following behind the children and greedily eating their bread crumb trail is an old crow.  The bracelet is carved from a gorgeous read bakelite lightly marbled with black.   I also applied a bit of darker dye to the finer carved details and shadows for emphasis.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches and the walls were carved from 1 3/8 inches wide, nearly 5/8 of an inch thick.  My signature and the date of creation are inscribed on the inner surface.  Don't miss out on this one, kiddies, it's the original from which I am casting a limited edition series of polyurethane bracelets in various colors.  This is the one and only genuine bakelite carving.  If, however, it is a bit pricey for you....you might check my soon to be listed polyurethane editions.  They are every bit as attractive in color as bakelite and, while being a bit lighter in weight, are very nice quality and durable AND....quite a bit cheaper!

Bakelite Valentines Sweethearts Bracelet

Now here is a sweet little design that I created to list on ebay for Valentine's Day, 2011.  Unfortunately my timing and ebay bidding were off and the auction did not reach my reserve price.  Of course I had set it a bit high in hopes that I would be able to keep the bracelet long enough to make a mold of it for casting limited edition polyurethane reproductions of the design.  The bracelet features a cute little boy and girl with a background of different sized hearts.  The girl looks shyly upon the boy, who is offering her a bouquet of flowers and a Valentine's day card.  The carving is very detailed and the bracelet turned out quite nicely.  The vintage bakelite is a lovely mix of red with black swirls.  The boy and girl both have inlaid black bakelite eyes and I applied a bit of darker enamel dye to emphasize the finer carved details and shadows.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls were carved from 1 1/2 inches wide and nearly 5/8 of an inch thick.  My signature and the date of creation are inscribed on the inner surface.  And please have a look at the limited edition polyurethane series which will be coming soon.

Yellow Bakelite Smiley Faces Bracelet Bangle

This is the second Smileys bracelet that I've carved the bracelet entirely of the cute little faces.  Other versions have included smileys inlaid into a different colored bakelite base.  This design features 10 great whimsical smiley faces with more as a background.  Included are two female smileys, with admirers to one side of each and an angel and a devil to the other side, as well as crazy smileys and laughing smileys.  Each face has bakelite inlaid for the eyes and, in the case of those with larger open mouths, teeth, tongues and even the black areas behind.  The females' lips, the one smiley with hearts for eyes, and the devilish smiley's horns and goatee, are all also inlaid bakelite.  The eyebrows, lashes and other thin black lines are carved and filled with black enamel.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 5/8 inches.  The walls are carved from 1 1/2 inches wide and about 3/8 of an inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.

Pink Bakelite Beauty & Fashion Items Bracelet

Now this is one dandy and detailed bracelet design!  This particular bracelet is one that, as you might guess, I spent quite a lot of time designing and then carving.  The bracelet is carved from a gorgeous and rare vintage marbled pink bakelite.  The design features lots and lots of different beauty and fashion items.  There are a pair of high heeled shoes, a pearl necklace, lipstick (with red bakelite inlaid for the lipstick), sunglasses (clear gray bakelite inlaid for the lenses), a hair dryer (blue black bakelite inlaid for the blower end), perfume spray bottle, a small rouge pot, a diary and pencil, comb, mirror (with clear apple juice bakelite backed with silver foil inlaid), a tube of lotion, a cell phone, purse, nail polish (inlaid black brush and red bottle), a cold cream jar, a make up brush, make up kit, eyeliner, perfume/scent atomizer, scissors, brush, and another comb and jar of cream.  Whew...that's quite a list!  The bracelet is one that I am reproducing in limited edition polyurethane, making this a dandy collectible as it is the original bakelite carving!  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls were carved from 1 3/8 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.

Red Riding Hood and Wolf Bakelite Bracelet

Here is another bracelet design in my Nursery Rhymes series, this one featuring Little Red Riding Hood and the mean Old Wolf.  In my design, Red Riding Hood is in full flight with the wolf chasing close behind her.  Red's cloak is flapping disheveled in the wind and her basket of goodies that she was taking to her grandmother is spilling out behind her.  Falling from the basket are breads, a jar of jam, and some cookies.  The wolf's granny disguise is also falling off as it runs behind Red Riding Hood.  Granny's glasses are falling off of the wolf's head, her nightcap blowing off and her nightgown as well.  The bracelet is carved from a lovely dark red and I've applied a dark dye to emphasize shadows and finer carved details.  The wolf's and Red Riding Hood's eyes are inlaid bakelite.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls were carved from 1 1/2 inches wide and about 5/8 of an inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.  This is another gorgeous one of a kind carving that I'm reproducing in polyurethane so, if you feel this bracelet is a bit pricey, please check those limited editions as they become available.

Pink Bakelite Mermaids Bracelet

Perhaps pink is a bit odd of a color for mermaids, this is a gorgeous carved bakelite bracelet that I finished in spring of 2011.  I chose to carve it from vintage pink bakelite because of the femine color and because pink is such a rare color for bakelite bracelets.   In the pictures, the pink appears very pink and much lighter than the bracelet is in person.  It is a bit more red/maroon-pink in color.  The design is of course an original and features a pair of mermaids chasing each other and with some small fishies swimming along with them.  The mermaids' eyes are inlaid blue bakelite and I've used a bit of dark red dye to emphasize shadows and the finer carved lines.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 1/2 inches.  The walls are carved from 1 1/4 inches wide and about 3/8 of an inch thick.  My signature and the date of creation are inscribed on the inner surface.  This bracelet, too, is one that I am reproducting in limited edition polyurethane.

Carved Turquoise Bakelite Mermaid & Neptune Bracelet Bangle

This is an awesome bracelet that I've carved from turquoise colored vintage bakelite/catalin.  The design is an original and the bracelet is one that I've actually listed on ebay previously.  It didn't meet my reserve there and I'm relisting it here because I have so few bracelets still available on the website.  I designed this bracelet to depict the King Neptune as a merman chasing a lovely mermaid.  Neptune has trident in one hand and the other reaches out for the mermaid, who has one hand luring him on.  In between and around the two are carved whirls of the sea/ocean current and several little fish and other sea creatures.  This turquoise bakelite will eventually oxidize to a light aqua blue green in color but which should still show some turquoise to it's hue.  I used a bit of blue enamel wash in the finer carved details to add emphasis.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 1/2 inches.  The walls are 1 1/2 inches wide and about 3/8 of an inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the lightly polished inner surface.

Carved Black Bakelite Cobra Snake Bracelet Bangle

Here is a dandy cobra snake bracelet that I carved and listed on ebay quite some time ago.  It didn't meet the reserve that I had listed it at there so rather than relist it, I decided to put it up for sale here on my website because I'm running low on bracelets that I have available.  The cobras are carved with very close attention to detail and took me a very long time to finish.  Each snake has the tail of the other in its mouth.  The eyes are inlaid using red and black bakelite, and the markings on the cobras' hoods are inlaid using white bakelite which has oxidized to yellow.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls are 1 1/2 inches wide at the widest point and about 1/2 inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.

Carved Red Foxes Bracelet

This is a dandy bracelet which I carved from vintage bakelite recently.  It is similar to an earlier design that I carved and sold but I've changed the design a bit.  It features two red foxes chasing each other around the bracelet.  The bracelet is carved from a 1/2 inch thick vintage red bakelite bracelet base and I inlaid the foxes white and black markings and eyes/noses on their faces and tails.  The bracelet is very striking in appearance and very noticeable.  It is very well made and has a nice polish as well.  The inner diameter is 2 9/16 inches.  The walls vary from 1 1/4 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick.  My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner surface.

Carved Rootbeer Bakelite Fiddler Crabs Bracelet

This is an awesome bracelet that I've carved from vintage rootbeer colored bakelite.  The design features 7 fiddler crabs crawling around on a bed of pebbles, as well as a small snail.  The crabs are all carved in careful detail and have black enamel eyes.  The bracelet is carefully polished and has a wonderful translucent quality in good lighting.  The marbling in the rootbeer color is awesome.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls are 1 1/2 inches wide and carved from 1/2 inch thick.  My signature and the date that I finished the bracelet are inscribed on the inner surface.

Carved Rootbeer Bakelite Turtles Bracelet

This bracelet is one that I carved to depict a group of 8 turtles sort of playing leap frog.  Each turtle is carved so that its head and front legs are over the back of the turtle in front of it.  All of the turtles are very similar, nearly identical.  All have inlaid eyes of white and black bakelite also.  The bracelet is carved from a very handsome rootbeer colored bakelite which is translucent and has some really wonderful marbling in it.  The bracelet has an inner diameter of 2 9/16 inches.  The walls are close to 1 1/2 inches wide, nearly 1/2 inch thick in the thicker areas.  I inscribed my signature and the date of the carving on the inner surface.

Translucent Yellow Swirl Deeply Carved Through Floral Design Bangle

This is a nice vintage lemony yellow Bakelite that has swirls of lighter yellows and cream.  The design is an original and quite complex.  The walls of the bangle are 1 & 1/4 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick.  The inner diameter is a bit over 2 & 1/2 inches.  Pictures just don't do this beauty justice.  Very carefully carved and patiently polished, this is a very nice piece.  I inscribed my signature and the date on the inside surface.

Carved and Laminated Bakelite Tulips Bangle

Carved from vintage Bakelite stock in a nice grassy green swirl, this bangle has 12 tulips evenly laid out on its surface in a alternating pattern.  There are two each of the following colors: blue, pink/red, yellow, orange, dark red or maroon, and lavender.  The tulip bloom colors are also from vintage Bakelite and are laminated into the surface of the bangle, not just stuck on top.  Each tulip bloom is carved like a newly opened flower still slightly closed at the top.  The bangle is very carefully carved and polished.  The walls are 1 & 1/2 inches wide, vary from 5/16th of an inch thick (thicker if measured on the flower blooms themselves), and the bangle is very slightly domed so that the center of the walls are thicker than the edges.  The inner diameter is 2 & 1/2 inches.  I've inscribed my signature and the date inside and the inner surface is pretty much unaltered from the way it came from the factory so you may be able to get a positive Bakelite test with Simichrome or other testing methods (definitely will test positive with hot water).

Red, White, and Blue Saturn Style Bakelite Bangle

Here is a wonderfully patriotic bangle laminated using the three U.S. Flag colors, red, white and blue.  All three colors are vintage Bakelite (white will eventually oxidize to a nice buttery cream corn color).  The middle blue moon ring or layer in the bangle is upraised slightly in a Saturn design style.  The walls measure 1 & 1/8 inches wide and the thickness varies from 3/8 at the blue layer to just under 1/4 inch and sloping to slightly less at the edges.  The inner diameter is 2 & 1/2 inches.  The bangle is nicely polished both outside and in, and I have inscribed my signature and the date.

Reverse Carved Teal or Turquoise Blue Prystal Bakelite Bangle

This is a lovely, lovely color of Prystal Bakelite in a deep turquoise blue color.  I reverse carved an alternating floral pattern with some linear designs into the inner surface of this beautiful bracelet and then gave it a high degree of polish.  As you can see in the pictures, it is very reflective.  Because of the clear nature of this material, I did not sign or date this bracelet as of yet.  I will leave it up to a new owner to decide whether I should or not.  I will be happy to perhaps paint the reverse carving with a color of your choosing, which will enable me to sign the back of one of the carved areas.  The inner diameter of this bracelet is 2 & 1/2 inches and the walls are 1 & 1/4 inches wide, domed down to the edges from a 1/4 inch thick center.

Reverse Carved Apple Juice & Red Bakelite Stretch Bracelet

This is one of the prettiest bracelets that I've created so far. I sometimes take influence from vintage designs and have seen bracelets in a similar style to this (not as pretty though.......) yet much different in appearance. Using a faceted piece of vintage apple juice Bakelite, I reverse carved a pretty floral pattern into it which includes white flowers, red berries and green leaves, all on gold stems. The bracelet has an almost Christmas-y look to it but, with the shine of freshly carved and polished Bakelite, this is one bracelet you won't mind wearing year round. Strung on very stout elastic beading cord, the bracelet is very comfortable to wear and has an unstretched inner diameter of a bit over 7 inches. The larger red beads measure just a hair under 1 inch long, about 5/8 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick. The apple juice part is also just a bit under one inch in height, and over 1/4 inch thick. This is a spectacular bracelet and definitely one of a kind. I've inscribed my signature and the date on the inside surface of one of the large red beads.
