Carved Vegetable Ivory Horse Button

Here is a great button which I've carved depicting a horse running with plumes of dust swirling around its hooves.  The button is carved from vegetable ivory from the palm nut tree and I've added a bit of dyes to color it, as well as some black enamel for the hooves and a bit of black bakelite inlaid for the eye.  The button measures a bit over 2 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Jet Horse Button

This horse head button is carved from a handsome chunk of Jet.  Jet is a type of fossil wood which comes from only a few places in the world.  The more famous jet which was commonly carved into jewelry during Victorian times came from Whitby England, this jet is mined in the Lake Bakal region of Siberia, Russia.  The horse's head which I've carved is carefully detailed and polished and has an eye which is inlaid using bakelite.  The button measures 1 7/8 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Vegetable Ivory & Bone Indian Button

Here is a handsome button which I've carved from vegetable ivory in the form of an Indian brave.  The indian has black hair (and black eyes) which I colored with black India Ink, and two white feathers stuck into his headband that are carved from cow bone.  I carved a self shank onto the back and inscribed my signature there as well.  The button measures just under 1 3/4 inches at the longest measurement.

Carved & Dyed Deer Antler School of Fishies Button

Here is a fun little button that I've carved from deer antler and dyed blue prior to polishing it.  The button depicts a small school of four fishies swimming, or racing, together.  The carving is very detailed and the dye really makes it stand out wonderfully.  The eyes of the fish are all inlaid using bakelite.  The button measures right at 2 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Vegetable Ivory & Catlinite Hen & Chicks Button

This is a very nice button depicting a hen and four baby chicks chasing a big red earth worm crawling out of the dirt.  The body of the button which the hen & chicks is carved from (as well as the tall bunch of grass in the background) is vegetable ivory.  The hen's comb, beak, and eye are inlaid using bakelite.  The worm is catlinite, or pipestone, and the rest of the colors are all applied using dye.  This is a wonderfully detailed and very dimensional button.  It measures right at 1 3/4 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved on the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.
